Music Appreciation - Lecture Notes and Quiz Prep - 19 February 2004

Definitions to know:

Youth Culture - The social, political, artistic, and religious attitudes of a generation of people.

Electronics and Technology - Amplifiers, electric guitars, electric organs, digital pianos, recording technology, cassette tapes, compact discs. What is their impact on the music world? How did Radio and Television revolutionize the distribution and listening of music? How does Internet distribution of music change how you listen to music?

Genres - Kinds of styles. Rock, Heavy Metal, Disco, Funk, Reggae, Punk, etc...are examples, but you should see your notes for "Rap Music" and "Rock Music" for more specifics. Be able to describe each kind of style, and what makes it unique. Also be able to dsescribe what things (like instruments used) are similar across all genres.

High Art/Low Art - Based on the definition from your notes (January 29), be able to discuss whether a piece of music can be classified based on this definition, and support your argument. Remember, there is not a single "right answer" and most of your quiz grade will be based on your ability to reasonably discuss the music using the terminology you have learned in class.
