Music Appreciation 8
Example Quiz 2
22 April 2004

PART 1 of 2

Please answer two of the following three questions on a separate sheet of paper. I expect complete sentences, and supported statements using the terminology that you have learned in this class. You are welcome to use the printed lecture notes as well as any notes you have taken in class on this quiz.

1. Identify following three terms and describe their functions based on the materials presented to you about electronic music in this class: tracker, pattern, samples.

Look at this question as:

  • What is a tracker and what does it do?

  • What is a pattern and what information does it provide?

  • What are samples and how are they used?

2. How did the availability of music writing software on the Amiga and later the PC empower an entire generation of composers/musicians?

This is a question regarding the social impact of the release of a software program. What did it do for young budding composers with a computer, but no access to expensive studio hardware?

3. How are the music styles of "realism" and "electronic" different? What is the subject of the debate between composers of both styles in the 1980-2004 electronic music scene? What is your personal opinion on this issue?

In the listening examples there are pieces that fall clearly on either side of the stylistic gap, while others seem to be a mix of both. I am looking for well-supported reasoning for your position.

PART 2 of 2

Listen to the provided audio excerpts, which we will call "A" and "B." Compare and contrast both pieces using the terminology you have learned in this class. Is one of them more "entertaining" or "enjoyable" than the other, in your opinion? Why?
