Final Project (DUE 24 May 2004)

Your final assignment for this class involves the creation of a piece of your own making using the tracking software we have been using in class. The guidelines for this composition are as follows:

  • Must be written using a tracker format; use either PlayerPro in the MIDI Lab or download ModPlug Tracker for use at home (Windows).
  • Must be at least two minutes in length.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of tracker functionality (use of channels, learn to apply one of the sample effects, creative use of samples, etc.)
  • Must use at least four different samples from the provided sample set. You are welcome to use additional sample sources if you desire.
  • There are no specific musical guidelines. Please feel free to compose any kind of work in any style. With your completed piece, every single person will need to turn in a single written page (approx. 400 words) discussing this experience in composing in the digital medium, and explain how your piece is organized.

Your final piece will be presented (i.e., played) for the class on Monday, May 24th. Following that, all of the projects will be written out to disk and an audio CD with all of your projects will be distributed to you as your keepsake of this class this year!

If you need assistance with using the tracker software, or have questions about how to organize your work, please email ochsa@solscope.com.
